Polygnosticism is a pluralistic outlook which espouses that all individuals' unique ideas about the divine, about what is sacred, and about how to approach these matters in practice are valid and significant for them. It is also a non-absolutist view which holds that no characterization of the divine or the sacred is universal (valid for everyone), and that no known divinities or sacred qualities can be called objective (existing independently of subjective perceptions).

The two tenets of polygnositicism are:

1.) Maintaining an agnostic stance regarding the existence and nature of phsyical divinity, God, gods, or objectively sacred matters — such as the natural sciences may someday be able to discover — while accepting perceptions and personal knoweldge of the divine, or personal attributions of sanctity, as substantial. Also, possibly espousing such perceptions, knowledge, or attributions oneself.

2.) Accepting both unwilled and willed perceptions of divinity and sacredness as valid. Deeming that people can take an active role in shaping their perceptions and experiences of divinity, or defining what is sacred to them. Recognizing as legitimate individuals' own determinations about the divine or about what is sacred, alongside any unwilled perceptions or religious counsel that they receive and subsequently uphold.

The polygnostic outlook is one which mirrors and accepts what we see in the world: people hold many different understandings of the divine, many different interpretations of what is sacred, and many different practices surrounding these concepts. Their lives are shaped in part by their own conceptualizations and practices, or lack thereof.

The substance in such understandings, interpretations, and practices — which are collectively known as personal gnosis — is evident in the effects which they have on people's lives. Many people benefit psychologically from practices like devotion or prayer. Some people who are naturally inclined toward theism or divine communion even require personal gnosis for their fulfillment, and this puts them at risk for exploitation by cults. Others have to escape from cults in order to discover the personal gnosis which is most beneficial and true to their natures.

In time, Polygnostic.info will become a resource for the understanding of personal gnosis, a jumping-off point as well as a gateway to more thorough explorations of the topic.
